On The Cuff

There is an article in the January/February 2009 issue of Designs in Machine Embroidery titled On The Cuff. The article by Eileen Roche is a fantastic how-to on monograming on the cuff of men's shirts. It covers everything from lettering size, to placement, to stablizing and hooping. Well, I couldn't pass up this learning experience so..........now my dear hubby has monograms on his shirt cuffs!!

The key to doing this is getting the placement worked out but I think I have it mastered now. It was fun doing these shirts.

Gingerbread Men

I am working on cards to give my co-workers next week and so far these two are my favorite of what I have made.

The inspiration for these cards came from the Winter 2009 issue of Paper Creations. I used the Gingerbread Man on the Stretch Your Imagination cartridge -- I think I am finally starting to get an idea of how to use the Cricut.

Our Crazy Arkansas Weather

We had freezing rain and sleet Monday night and woke yesterday morning to terrible travel conditions throughout the Central Arkansas area. We live in a very hilly section of town and our house is about midway nup on the north side of a hill. Our street is usually the last to clear when we have winter precipitation. Yesterday our street was solid ice...needless to say we didn't even attempt to venture out. The street was still covered with ice when we went to bed last night.

But low and behold when I woke this morning, our street was completely clear of ice!!!!

The temperature had risen during the night and melted the ice. That's the thing about our crazy Arkansas weather, if you don't like it just wait 5 minutes and it will change. Now we have fog and chance of thunderstorms and the temp is supposed to be in the 50's tomorrow. I'm ready for sunshine!

December Birthday Cards

Today is my sister-in-law Marilyn's birthday. This is the birthday card that I made for her. The paper is from Basic Grey's Ambrosia Paper Pad but the colors do not really show up that good in this picture. I'm not the best photographer around. I got the inspiration for this card from the new January 2009 issue of CardMaker that I just got in the mail last week.

Tomorrow is my girlfriend at work, Karen's birthday. This is the card that I made for her. This gorgeous paper is from Basic Grey's Offbeat paper pad. The inspiration for this card also came from the new issue of CardMaker.

We've got a winter storm warning tonight for freezing rain and sleet and cold temperatures. Thank goodness I don't have to report for jury duty tomorrow morning because who knows if I will be able to get off the hill in the morning. I may be taking a personal day at work for inclement weather because I don't even attempt to drive on ice.

The Circus

Ringling Bros. is in town with a one ring circus at the Arena. We took Addie and Sarabeth this morning to see it. We went with Ronny's sister and brother-in-law and their 3 year old grandson, Jonah. That was an experience with a 3 year old, a 4 year old, and a 5 year old! I think of the three, Addie enjoyed it the most.

Tuesday

Well it's Tuesday again and I have to report for jury duty again this morning. I'll be glad when this month is over and my jury duty time is finished. Wish me luck that I don't get picked.

Here is another holiday card that I made. I had fun using the Cricut to make the trees and the sentiment.

My New Scrapbooking Desk

I have my new scrapbooking desk pretty well set up...I've worked on it all afternoon and into the evening. This was my father-in-law's roll top desk. Ronny and our grandsons picked it up yesterday before they went to the Arkansas LSU game here in Little Rock. The desk is huge and would not go through the doorway into my craft room so they had to leave it standing on its side in the entrance hall. Last night Ronny started removing about a million screws that hold the roll top to the base. He finished taking out the screws this morning and we finally got the roll top separated from the base. We got the roll top moved into the room and then he had to take the door to the room off to get the base in there. And it was a tight squeeze. Then the job of attaching the roll top back on the base began. We finally had it put back together and set in place about noon. What a project it turned out to be! I think I am really going to like it. There is so much space to keep everything -- a whole lot more than the little desk that I was using.

I couldn't wait to use the desk so I made this card tonight using Tamara's card sketch #72 for my inspiration.

My sewing and embroidery area is pretty well set up -- will post pictures of that area later.

I have a lot more storage organization to do -- fabric, etc. But I am going to take my time doing that. The main thing right now is that the room is to the point that I can sew, do machine embroidery, make cards and scrapbook.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had a very enjoyable dinner at the home of my son-in-law Danny's sister.

Oh What a Mess

My sewing/craft room is one big mess right now!!! My dear hubby found a wonderful sewing machine cabinet at an estate sale last weekend. I have a really great one that I use for my embroidery machine and this one will be perfect for my sewing machine. He also is getting his Dad's roll top desk which he has decided will make a wonderful scrapbooking desk with all it's drawers and cubby holes. But the whole room has to be rearranged to make everything fit. One tall cabinet has to leave the room along with a folding table and the table/desk that my computer was on. Yesterday he got my computer moved to the desk that I was using for scrapbooking. Everything that was on that desk is now on the folding table -- do you get the picture? Lots and lots of continually shifting things around. It's just one big mess right now. Yesterday I went to KMart on my lunch hour and bought several big Rubbermaid storage containers to store fabric in. I am taking a vacation day Wednesday so we can spend the day working on the room. I'll be doing a lot of sorting of things in cabinets and unloading them so they can be moved. Hopefully we can get it all rearranged except for the roll top which he plans to get on Friday when our grandsons can help him move it. It will be great when it is finished and I think I will have a much more workable furniture layout in the room. But getting to that point is not any fun. Oh well, let's just consider it a good organizational time.

Funky Reindeer

I finished up my sewing for Sarabeth's birthday presents today. I embroidered this Christmas shirt for her using a design from Designs by JuJu's Funky Reindeer design set. I think it is adorable.

Then I made her this pair of pj's using a Hannah Montana flannel print.

And look at these adorable Christmas socks that I found for her at Wal Mart. The Santa and the reindeer light up with movement.

We're going to Benton tomorrow afternoon to see Sarabeth and Addison and will have a little birthday celebration.

I'm Still Here

Wow, I can't believe it has been so long since I posted and been blog hopping. No excuse.....just haven't sat down at the computer to do it.

Sarabeth will be five years old on Monday, November 24. It just doesn't seem possible that she will be that old. Where does the time go? I have made her two jumpers for her birthday and have plans to make her a pair of Hannah Montana pj's and embroider a couple of shirts. Here are the jumpers.

This is a denim jumper with a machine embroidery applique and decorative stitching.

This is a navy cordoury jumper for Christmas. I love this Christmas tree machine embroidery applique design.

I have ordered several red tee shirts from WalMart on line for Addie and Sarabeth so I can do some Christmas shirts for them. We checked several stores in our area and none had the red long sleeve shirts in their size.

Yesterday was another day from H--- with jury duty. I spent the whole day at the courthouse....'cause they didn't start jury selection until 12 noon. It was a 1st degree murder case. My prayers were answered everytime they reached into the box to draw a name -- my name was never drawn. So the judge finally excused those of us whose name was not drawn at 5:00 p.m. once they had a jury finalized. But it was a very long day spend sitting on either the horrible wooden benches in the hallway waiting for the jury pool to be called into the courtroom or sitting in the equally horrible wooden seats in the courtroom.

Happy Saturday

It's a beautiful Autumn day here in Little Rock. The trees have been just gorgeous this week and now the leaves are falling.

Tuesday is a holiday from work and I decided to take a vacation day Monday so I could have a wonderful four day weekend. To kick the weekend off, Robin and I are getting together this afternoon with another scrappin' mother daughter duo for a scrappin' good time. We always have a good time when we get together with Joy and Jean. I haven't done any layouts or made any cards in a while so I am looking forward to it.

Hope you have a great Saturday!!

Election Day

We had two weeks of early voting but I wasn't able to vote early...the hours the polls were open was not compatible with my work hours. There were record numbers of people voting early and I heard lots of stories about the long lines at the various early voting locations. I figured I would just take my chances going to the polls after work today.

The manager of our office told me to go vote and not clock out when I went. To do it on the bank's time. My office is a little over 2 miles northeast of my house and my polling location is a little over a mile west of my house. So I left the office at 1:12 this afternoon and drove to St James where I vote. I walked in -- found no lines -- voted and was back at work at 1:30. That's less than 20 minutes all total. I couldn't believe it. I'm glad I didn't try to go through the hassel of voting early.

Halloween Pictures

Robin has posted pictures of "Lizard Witch" and "Hannah Montana" on her blog. So pop on over here to see my little granddaughters in their costumes.

Yeah!!!! Do not have to report for jury duty today. Did I ever get lucky last week. A capital murder trial started in my division on Thursday which was to last several days. I sure am glad that I missed out on that one.

My body is still operating on daylight savings time...will take me a couple of weeks to adjust to it but in the meantime it seems like the days sure are long.

Here Fishy Fishy

Addison got a fishing pole for her birthday last summer. Her daddy has since taken her fishing several times and she loves it. One morning last week I got behind a car on my way to work that had a bumper sticker with the perfect saying for her on it.....Here Fishy Fishy. I just knew I had to find a way to incorporate it into an embroidery design for a shirt for her. Here is Addie's fishing shirt.

Tag Lovie

When Joy bought the material for the camo/razorback baby tote that I made for her recently to give as a gift, she also got a remnant of camo fleece that she asked me to make small soft square that the baby could snuggle with when he got older. Now here is an instance where mother and daughter were not on the same wave length. I just couldn't visualize what she was talking about. But Robin came to the rescue this week when she was here at lunch and asked me if I had done anything with that piece of fleece. She got on my computer and found a Tag Lovie on a blog and showed it to me. I gather that a baby or toddler carries this around instead of a blankie. So I made a Tag Lovie tonight for Joy to give as a gift. And who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks!!

I embroidered the baby's name in hunter's orange and and added orange ribbon tags around the edge. I stitched two pieces of fabric right sides together and turned so it is nicely finished on the outer edged.

Jury Duty

In August I received my notice for Circuit Court jury duty for a four month period beginning September 1 and ending December 31. I reported for orientation as instructed and the group summoned was divided into 3 jury pools....Tuesday jurors, Wednesday jurors and Thursday jurors. I am one of the Tuesday jurors. I have to call every Monday to see if I have to report the following day.

******

Last Tuesday was the first day the Tuesday jurors had to report -- we got lucky for a few weeks. And then I had to report again today. I know that this is my civic duty but it sure has left a bad taste in my mouth .

******

The first obstacle one encounters when reporting for jury duty is finding a parking place within a reasonable distance from the courthouse. Let's face it, I'm 63 years old with problems with my back and hip so walking any distance is not always the most pleasant thing for me. So make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to find a place to park.

******

Then it's hurry up and wait outside in the hall when you get to your assigned courtroom. The hallway is lined with the MOST UNCOMFORTABLE WOODEN BENCHES. If you are early enough, you can find a seat while you wait to be called into the courtroom. I gather that early morning is set aside for entering pleas, etc. So while you are sitting in the hall waiting for the jury pool to be called in, there are prisoners handcuffed and shackled being taken in and out of the courtroom in front of you. What an experience!!

******

Finally the door opens and the jury pool gets to enter the courtroom. The seats in the courtoom are not much of an improvement over the torture chamber benches in the hallway. The Baliff calls the roll to see who did show up.

******

Last week after roll call, the judge came into the courtroom and told us that the defense attorney was sick and the trial was postponed. Now I don't wish bad health on anyone but I sure was relieved when we were excused and could leave.

******

Today after the roll call we were told that the attorneys had some motions to make and we were to wait in the hall. So back out into the hall we went for some more hurry up and wait. Finally we were called back into the courtroom. As I entered the courtroom, I saw the attorneys packing up and leaving. That was a good clue that we were going to be excused for the day. The judge told us that the defense attorney had entered a motion to have the trial continued at a later date...seems his client had taken drugs and attorney felt that he had diminished capacity with regard to helping with his defense. The motion was granted. What does that say about our legal system? So once again we were excused and could leave. This is how I spent my morning.

******

I am relieved that I have not yet had to go through jury selection and face the possibility of serving on a jury. Been there, done that about 12 years ago and once was more than enough for me. I am ready to go back to hearing the recording "Tuesday jurors do not have to report" when I call in on Mondays.

******

Meanwhile, I am going to the chiropractor tomorrow!!!!

Pirate Shirt for Addie

I did this shirt last week for Addie using a design from a Designs by JuJu Pirate Applique Set.

After Robin gave it to her she called me and told me that Addie had a request. Please no more bows on anything for her!! Like I've said before, she is no girlie girl.

I also made her this Sponge Bob pillow. She picked out the material.

I have to report for jury duty tomorrow....I just pray that I don't get picked to serve.

Camo Diva Purse

This morning I was sitting in my craft room looking at what was left of the camo material and thought there's enough left to make Sarabeth a little purse to go with her outfit that I made yesterday. I put my thinking cap on and cut two 8 1/2 inch squares of fabric, two strips of fabric for handles, and rummaged thru my stash for lining material. Here is the finished product which goes with the outfit that I showed in my post yesterday.

I also made some things for Addie today but I'll post them during the week.

Have a great week,

Sarabeth's Halloween Costume

Sarabeth wants to be Hannah Montana for Halloween. Here is the outfit that I made for her to wear for Halloween.

I found the iron on crystal transfer on eBay and applied it to a black tee shirt. There was enough black material left over from the trick or treat bags that I made for the girls to make a skirt. I did decorative stitching on the skirt to match the colors in the the transfer and added some hot fix crystals between the rows of stitching. Joy is supposed to get her a Hannah Montana wig and she will wear her black boots. I'm sure she will be wearing this outfit a lot.

There was enough camo material left over from the camo baby tote bag that I made recently for Joy for a baby gift to make a skirt for Sarabeth. Her daddy and big brothers are really into hunting and Sarabeth loves to wear camo. Joy found a brown tee shirt and I came up with this outfit for Sarabeth.

I did a decorative stitch on the skirt in brown to match the shirt and used some metallic thread to give a little shine and glitz to the embroidery on the shirt.

Now I just have to make the tail for Addie's "Lizard Witch" costume. The cape is finished and Robin has already taken it to Addie. I wish Addie would wear skirts -- I would love to make her some of these cute outfits but she won't have any thing to do with anything girly girly. So I've got to find some tee shirts to embroidery for her with monsters, pirates, etc.

Judy

Lizard Witch Costume Update

We've come up with a solution to Addie's request for a "Lizard Witch" costume for Halloween. For the lizard, she is going to be dressed in camo pants and top and I am going to make her a tail out of camo material. Robin and Addie went shopping over the weekend for the rest of the costume. Addie picked out an orange hat and material for a cape. The material is black with yellow half moons and stars. So tonight I have been playing around sketching out a pattern for the cape.

Sarabeth's costume is easy. She wants to be Hannah Montana. I found a Hannah Montana iron on crystal design on ebay that I bought. That is going to go on a black tee shirt and tonight I cut out a black skirt for her. I'll glitz up the skirt with some decorative stitching and maybe some hit fix crystals. Joy is getting her a Hannah Montana wig and she already has black boots.

Today was a wild day at work. The phone went absolutely crazy this morning....I decided we must have a full moon 'cause "the natives sure were restless".

Today's Sewing Project

Joy told me that Sarabeth is really getting into wearing skirts and that she wanted to get some for her. She can wear them with tights or leggings and her boots when the weather gets cold.

I came up with a very simple a-line skirt pattern and made this denim skirt for her. I dressed it up with an embroidery design and did a matching embroidery on a tee shirt to go with it.

Hope everybody has a great week.

Trick or Treat Bags

I had lots of fun making these Trick or Treat Bags for Addie and Sarabeth. I used a different embroidery design on each bag and topped each off with some decorative stitching. Then lined them with the same cute Halloween print.

Robin and I are still open to suggestions for a "Lizard Witch" costume for Addie. That child has some kind of imagination!

Halloween Cards

I spent most of the day Saturday sewing but I did manage to make a couple of quick Halloween cards since it was World Card Making Day. I used K & Company demensional stickers on both cards and ribbon that I got at Hancocks. The first card was based on a Page Plans sketch.

Luck, love, and laughter,

Baby Gift

My daughter Joy asked me to make a tote for her to give as a baby gift. She found that a lot of times it was good to have something smaller than a diaper bag to stick things in for Sarabeth when just making a quick trip. She shopped for material and this is what she brought me to use for the tote.

Barrett's daddy does a lot of hunting and his mommy and daddy are both big Arkansas Razorback fans. So he has a camo tote bag lined with Arkansas Razorback fabric. How's that for personalization!!

Saturday Sewing Projects

I decided Saturday to treat myself to some new things. I had a black tee shirt just waiting for embroidery and I decided to do the pumpkin design on the shirt instead of on a tote. I think it really pops on the black shirt.

Then I started on a new purse/tote for myself. I went through my Autumn embroidery machine designs and decided on this one. I raided my fabric stash for lining material and my ribbon stash for trim.

I've Been a Busy Bee

I've been working on things to send to our cousin to put in her store in Alabama for sale. Since I am testing the waters to see if there is any demand for my things, I am only sending a few items. Here are some that I am sending to her tomorrow.
I made these two purses. I love the pumkin purse. I definitely have to make one for myself.

Sheila said scrapbooking is real big in her area so I did four of my Scrapbooking Diva shirts.

I have the small Scrapbooking Diva tote that I made earlier to include in the box and if I don't run out of steam, I'd like to make some little girl's boutique hairbows.

Personal Shopper

I have my very own personal shopper!!

I recently received a very nice order for large denim tote bags and the smaller purses like what I made last Spring which will be for Christmas gifts. I mentioned to my hubby Sunday that I needed to keep a lookout at Hancocks, Hobby Lobby and Wal Mart for denim to be on sale. He replied that he had to do a posting in Batesville this week and did I want him to go to the big fabric warehouse that is there. To which I replied, THAT WOULD BE GREAT.

Yesterday he went to Batesville to do his foreclosure sale posting at the courthouse (he is a 3rd party posting provider for a local attorney) armed with samples of denim and a sample of the craft stiffner/interfacing that I use in the bags. The amount of fabric in this store is mind boggling and the prices are fantastic. He bought denim for me but they were out of the stiff interfacing that I need.

When he left Batesville, he went on to Heber Springs to do another posting at the courthouse there. While at the courthouse, he asked to see a telephone directory so he could see if there were any fabric stores. He found Quilter's Corner Fabric and they had the stiff interfacing that I need. He brought me her business card and said she would be happy to mail some to me whenever I needed more.

He is the greatest!!

Embroidered Shirts

I wasn't very creative this week -- did not get any cards or layouts made. I did manage, however, to embellish three shirts with machine embroidery.
********
Addie asked for a shirt with a soccer ball on it so here is her shirt.

********
Addie is invited to a birthday party today for one of her preschool classmates and Robin asked me to do a couple of shirts for Addie's gift for her. Raygan's daddy is one of the coaches at the high school so with that in mind I did this shirt for her.

********
Every little girl is a princess and needs a crown so here is one for Raygan. I added some bling to it with hot fix crystals.

********
It seems like I have a million and one things that I need to do this weekend. Time to make a to do list and prioritize it. Then see how much I can get done or not get done as the case may be.
********

Have a great weekend.

Tamara's Card Sketch #61 & Recipe Challenge #14

Here is a card I made using Tamara's Card Sketch #61.

Basic Grey Ambrosia paper pad; Prima flowers; rhinestone brads; Offray ribbon; and Stampabilities stamp for sentiment.

And this card was made using Tamara's Scrapping Recipe Challenge #14.

The challenge was to use lace, flowers, and buttons.

The Paper Studio Basics paper pack; Prima Flowers; lace and button from my stash; Threading Water punch; Swiss Dots embossing folder; and Stampabilities stamp for sentiment.

We were very lucky....Ike moved through our area very quickly overnight. I was so tired that I slept through it. We did loose power during the night but it was back on at 9:00 this morning. And the sun began to shine very shortly after that.
Have a great week everyone.

Scrapbooking Diva Tote

I made a Scrapbooking Diva tote bag today. But this one is smaller than the ones that I made last Spring and not quite as complicated to put together.

I am going to make several tote bags, purses, and tee shirts and send to a cousin in Alabama to put in her store to sell. She was here this week and saw a couple of the purses that I made and told me that I needed to make some for her to put in her store. She has an antique mall/flea market and also carries a lot of handmade items. So I am going to test the waters with a few things and see if they sell.

The outer bands of Ike arrived this afternoon and there was heavy rain in the counties around us and a lot of tornado warnings. It all skirted metropolitan Little Rock. We have had as yet very little rain but it sounds like the wind may be picking up some. We are supposed to get 3 to 6 inches of rain tonight with 20-25+ mph sustained winds and supposedly it will all be moved out of the state by tomorrow afternoon.

I have stuff strewn all over my craft room from sewing so I need to take a few minutes to get things picked up and put away. Then think I'll make a card or two before I call it a night.
Luck, love and laughter,
Judy

Waiting for Ike

It's very cloudy here in Little Rock and we are waiting for Ike to make his presence known.....probably this evening. I am looking out the window and I can see that a little breeze has started up. I know that Ike has now been downgraded to a tropical storm so hopefully by the time he gets this far north he will be a tropical depression or less. Let's just hope that he doesn't stall out over us and hang around here as long as Gustav did.

My thoughts and prayers are with those who were in Hurricane Ike's path in Texas and Louisiana. We have a cousin in Houston who is okay. They do have water damage in their home from water coming in under the doors and of course, no power. My MIL not been able to reach her brother in Houston so hopefully he and his wife are safe.

I am spending the day working on sewing projects and getting laundry finished and have the TV on in the background tuned to The Weather Channel.

Tote Bags

Last Spring when I made Robin a purse and a tote bag, Addie tried to take one and fill it up with her toys. I have been wanting to make both of the GD's a tote of their own and made this my sewing project yesterday. I had an assembly line going working on both of them at the same time.

******

Here is Addie's tote.

And here is Sarabeth's.

I raided my stash of fabric, rick rack, and ribbon for the material and trim. Used the 12x12 Cricut mat as a pattern to cut the fabric and went from there. I used Explorations Lettering to set up the embroidery design for each.
